El Mirage Declares Local State of Emergency
Amid COVID-19 Health Threat
Closing Public Facilities and Canceling Events
[El Mirage, AZ March 17, 2020] – Today, El Mirage Mayor Alexis Hermosillo declared a state of emergency in response to the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
In the interest of employee safety and public health the City will close public access to City facilities through April 3 and cancel special events and community workshops through May 10. Essential City Services such as police, fire, water, sewer and trash services will continue to operate.
“The Proclamation provides the City Manager with clarity and the ability to act decisively which is vital to protecting public health and responding to the evolving threats posed by COVID-19,” said Mayor Hermosillo.
City Manager Crystal Dyches announced the following City facilities will be closed to the public for walk-in services:
Utility Customer Service
While City facilities are closed, the leadership team is determining how to best continue service. Many staff members will telecommute and be available by phone and e-mail. Others will be available by appointment.
Utility customers may conduct business by phone, e-mail or internet. In addition, the City plans to suspend utility service disconnections until further notice.
Activities at the El Mirage Senior Center will resume when officials have evaluated the public health risk and determine that it is safe to resume normal operations.
The Police and Fire Departments will continue to respond to calls. Public safety personnel have been trained and equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and will continue to serve the public with the usual high standard of response and protection.
The Fire Department Administrative Office will be closed for walk-in services. The Fire Department will continue to install car safety seats by appointment only. Residents can call the number listed below to schedule an appointment.
