ISO Rating

ISO (INSURANCE SERVICES OFFICE RATING)

Homeowner and business insurance companies use many factors when determining the cost of your insurance premiums. One major factor is the level of fire protection. Most insurance carriers use what is known as ISO to determine the quality of fire protection available and therefore establish insurance rates.

The Insurance Services Office (ISO) uses the Public Protection Classification (PPC) to gauge the ability of a local fire department to respond to fires. A community’s public fire protection information is collected and analyzed by ISO using its Fire Suppression Rating Schedule.

A classification of 1-10 is then assigned based upon the results of the survey. Class 1 is the best rating and Class 10 is basically an indication of no fire protection. The ISO Public Protection Classification plays an important role in the underwriting process at insurance companies. In fact, most U.S. insurers, including the largest ones, use PPC information as part of their decision-making when deciding what business to write, coverage’s to offer, or prices to charge for personal or commercial property insurance.

After ISO completed an analysis of the structural fire suppression delivery system provided in our community, the City of El Mirage Public Protection Classification (PPC) dual rating was assigned as 2/2X (2018)

Properties within 5 miles of the fire station and 1,000 ft. or less from a fire hydrant are a “2” rating and any property that does not fall into these parameters are a “2X” rating.
